Denef Huvaj is a visual artist based in Istanbul, with Caucasian roots. Her works usually revolve around themes of belonging, otherness and identity: social identity, diasporic identity and cultural identity. She oftentimes works with an emic perspective as the diaspora she is a part of becomes her subject, and sometimes with an outsider’s perspective. The city, the village and social classes, and the many contexts around these are her main interests. Her driving force is to delve into speculative pasts, memories and dreams with the aim of shaking up history’s dominant narratives and creating new reference points for the feature.
